Yesterday sex workers
marked the international day on ending violence against prostitutes in the
streets of Nairobi. The sex workers had one message to the government to offer
them protection and recognition as laborers.
While addressing sex workers, Kenya Sex Workers
Alliance were hard on police officers who have been harassing sex workers and
even molesting them at the police stations. The alliance also condemned the
Uganda government for their harsh laws against homosexuals.
African Sex
Workers Alliance regional coordinator Doughtie Ogutu, urged the government to
protect the sex workers and also recognize them as laborers since they are
ready to pay taxes.
She further
condemned the killing of four sex workers in Thika a while back, the case has
never been followed up and she accused police of laxity. She said
the constant harassment by police as inhumane and unconstitutional.
Ogutu
further added that the sex workers are highly committed to the fight against
HIV/Aids in the society.
