Champions League winners Chelsea did not have a single player named in the FIFPro World XI for 2012.
And the Premier League also drew a blank as all 11 players came from Spain’s La Liga — 10 of them from Real Madrid and Barcelona and six from the Spanish side which won Euro 2012.
In an exchange on Twitter, Barnet striker Steve Kabba commented on Cole’s omission but the England star responded: “No drama thou its cool this stuff happens #iwantspanishpassport”
Fellow Stamford Bridge legend Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris said: “It’s strange that the team which won the Champions League cannot get one player in this team.
“Put it this way — if I had the choice between Marcelo and Ashley Cole, I wouldn’t pick Marcelo. Nor would a lot of managers in Europe, maybe including Jose Mourinho!”
Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand was never likely to back Cole’s claim after the pair fell out over the racism saga involving Chelsea skipper John Terry and Ferdinand’s brother Anton.
But Ferdinand DID support his new Manchester United team-mate Robin van Persie, saying on Twitter:
“How is RVP not in team of the season?”
Germany legend Lothar Matthaus said: “I cannot understand that the FIFPro World XI only consists of players from La Liga.”
Harris added: “Lots of people say the Spanish League is the best in the world. But if you take out Barcelona and Real Madrid, what’s left?”
Many critics championed the cause of Andrea Pirlo, the midfield maestro who helped Juventus to the Serie A title and Italy to the final of Euro 2012.
But Cole, who also won the FA Cup with Chelsea and performed well at Euro 2012, perhaps has the most cause to feel hard done by in the poll of FIFPro’s 45,000 members.
Marcelo had a good year but the vote was for the four best defenders, not necessarily in a recognised formation.
In 2012, Barcelona pair Dani Alves and Gerard Pique suffered from poor form and injuries but seem to have made the final team as much on reputation as achievement.
It is only the second time since FIFPro started compiling their World XI of the Year in 2005 that the Champions League winners have not had a representative in the final team.
The other occasion was after Liverpool’s dramatic victory in the first year of the poll.
