Caf announced a $10,000 fine on
Ethiopia following fan trouble in Monday’s Group C game against Zambia
at the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the football administrators reduced the fine to $5000 on condition that incidents like that are not repeated.
The supporters of the Walya Antelopes threw plastic bottles, vuvuzelas and other items on the pitch when goalkeeper Jemal Tassew was sent off for a professional foul.
According to Caf’s release: “The Board decided to impose a financial sanction on Ethiopia amounting to 10,000 USD, nevertheless, the board decided to suspend 5,000 USD on condition that Ethiopia is not found guilty of a similar offence until the end of the tournament.”
Goalkeeper Tassew was also suspended for two matches and will not play in the tournament again except if the Antelopes qualify for the knock out stages.
Caf also sent a warning to the football federation of the Democratic Republic of Congo whose fans encroached on the field of play in their Group B match against Ghana.
The second round of matches of the Afcon commence on Wednesday as South Africa take on Angola while Morocco face Cape Verde
