Murray, a finalist in Melbourne in
2010 and 2011, has yet to drop a set at this year's event, although the
US Open champion will face a much harder game in the last four - against
either Roger Federer or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Barring a brief first-set wobble, Murray was in charge of the contest and claimed a 6-4 6-1 6-2 victory.
Chardy had, on paper at least, looked to be a tricky opponent. He had beaten Murray in straight sets in their meeting at the Cincinnati Masters last year, while an impressive run to the quarter-finals had seen him claim the scalps of Marcel Granollers, Andreas Seppi and Juan Martin del Potro.
However he failed to match those highs as Murray took him apart.
