Rahman Ali told the Daily Mail in an article published Sunday that his brother, considered one of the greatest boxers of all time, can no longer recognize him or even speak. He said he does not believe the 71-year-old will make it to the summer.
“He's in a bad way. He's very sick,” Rahman Ali said. “It could be months, it could be days.”
Muhammad Ali, frequently called “The Greatest,” was diagnosed with Parkinson’s syndrome in 1984.
Although Muhammad Ali appeared comparatively strong as he lit the flame at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, he seemed in relatively bad shape at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Ali’s most recent health scare came in 2011 when he lapsed into unconsciousness at his 6,000-square-foot home in Arizona. He was hospitalized and treated for dehydration.
Rahman Ali also told the Daily Mail that his brother plans to place a response to a Martin Luther King Jr. quotation on his own gravestone.
Rahman Ali said it would read: “I tried to love somebody, I did try to feed the hungry. I did try, in my life, to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. The Greatest.”
The Daily Mail reported that Muhammed Ali’s wife of 26 years, Lonnie Ali, had no comment.
