Man Replaces Eye With Camera - Photos
Rob Spence is a documentary filmmaker, who after losing his eye in a shooting accident as a child, has replaced his prosthetic one with a video camera.
Describing how the idea came about on his website Eyeborg Blog Spence writes: 'Take a one eyed film maker, an unemployed engineer, and a vision for something that’s never been done before and you have yourself the EyeBorg Project.’
His childhood toy of the Six Million Dollar Man also inspired him to pursue the project. Spence refers to himself as ‘the eyeborg guy’, embracing the term bionic which involves fusing technology with the human body.
Whilst the camera does not restore his vision and is not connected to his brain it does give him the ability to create films wherever he is, transmiting wirelessly to a recording device.
Spence was recently recruited by video game developer Square Enix to produce a short documentary to help publicise the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The game directly engages with the issues which surround the possibility of human augmentation through artificial enhancement.
He says he is open to the develpoments and possibilities of prosphetic limbs and augmentation. "I wouldn't mind having a bionic ass" he jokes.
