Desmond Tutu Vows Not to Vote for ANC Anymore

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu says he will not vote for the Africa National Congress (ANC) again in future elections in the country.
Mr. Tutu who wrote an opinion page in the Mail-Guardian newspapers on Friday that he had in the past always been voting for the ANC.

“I have been voting for the ANC, but I would not be able to vote for them again, given the way things are going.

“I am not a card-carrying member of any political party, but there is need for a change in this country,” he said.

He said ANC had been a “very good” political machinery in leading the country in the struggle to be freed it from oppression.

“They were a good freedom-fighting unit. But it doesn’t seem to me now that a freedom-fighting unit can easily make the transition to becoming a political party,” Mr. Tutu said.

He said “the first thing the next elected Parliament has to do is to change the electoral system in a way to make elected leaders be accountable to the electorate.

“Those in Parliament are now accountable to their parties rather than the electorate.”

Mr. Tutu said that the country has the capacity to be one of the most vibrant countries in the world, for now “South Africa is the most unequal society in the world.

“We can’t hold our heads with pride with the levels of violence in our country. South Africans are amazing.

“They have been committed to the struggle for freedom during the political struggle against apartheid, as they were ready to lay down their lives.

“But now one can point to so many instances of corruption, and lack of accountability.

“The fall in standards have given ammunition to those who would say: ‘we warned you that once you have a

black majority government, you would see a steady decline in standards,” he said.
